Korg KARMA/Triton Series RPPR

Triggering and Creating

 

You want to have several user RPPR’s that can be triggered in real-time.  You want to be performing with a bass split combination.  Furthermore you want the dual arpeggiator or KARMA to control a bass line (preset for this example) and a right hand comp. 

 

Here is how to proceed.  Since one can have up to 200 song allocations, and since the RPPR function is specific to the sequencer, this is where we will create our mega-layer.  This tutorial encompasses several keyboards so specific combis will be used for each model.  This means that one must have the Factory Data loaded into the keyboard.

 

Triton (Le, Pro, Studio, Rack)

 

1)       Push the sequencer button, multi for the Rack.

2)       Touch the screen top right corner for the utility menu. 

          Push the F8 button for the Rack.

3)       Choose Copy from combi.  Now select your combination for this example 

          please select A065 Gig Split.  Place a check mark with effects,

          to tracks 1-8.  Select OK.

 

Now you have a combi with a split at middle C.  Turn on the arp button.  You will notice there is a drum pattern arpeggio for this combi.  The drums for this copied combi are on tracks 7 and 8.  They are both on midi channel 2.

 

IMPORTANT:  Make sure that your RPPR pattern is accessing the correct track (timbre) and a different midi channel than your bass and keys split.  To check midi channel and verify that this copied combination’s drums are indeed on Midi channel 2, push menu and go to Prm1 page, you will see the track by track Midi channels now.

 

We will first set up the dual arpeggiator for bass and piano comp.  Turn off arpeggiator by once again pushing the arp button.

4)       Push menu, then go the Arp page

5)       Setup tracks 1-8 as follows

 

Arpeggiator Run, check marks for A and B

1              2              3              4              5              6              7              8

A             off           off           B             B             off           off           off

Now we have arp A on the keyboard and arp B on the 2 bass sounds.  Now to set up the split point.

 

6)       Touch screen Zone or push F5 (Rack).

Set A:Key Btm:C-4 Top G9 (Arpeggio A key zone from middle C on)

Set B:Key Btm:C-1 Top B3 (Arpeggio B key zone from B right below middle C down)

 

7)       Touch screen Arp A (F3 for rack).  Set  Arp A to whichever piano comp you wish, 1 octave, 1/16 note resolution, gate to 100%, Velocity to key or 127, no swing, check mark on latch for this example.

 

8)       Touch screen Arp B (F4 for rack).  Set  Arp B to whichever bass arp you wish, 1 octave, 1/16 note resolution, gate to 100%, Velocity to key or 127, no swing, check mark on latch for this example.

 

Now for the RPPR.

9)       Push menu, and go to RPPR

10)    If you want to make your own RPPR’s you may do so on the Pattern page.  For this tutorial we will use presets.  Touch the screen RPPR (F2 for rack)

11)    Place a check mark in the Assign box.  Above this you will see C#2, this is the lowest black key on the 61 key Triton.

12)    Change the Pattern from user to Presets.  For this example choose P22 R&B 1/Std2.  To make the pattern continue when you release the key, Mode M:Endless.  Set the RPPR to track 7

13)    Push the exit button to return to the main menu.  Place a check mark in the RPPR box.

 

Hit the C#2 key and you will hear the pattern!  Turn on the arpeggio by push the arp button.   To turn it off, uncheck RPPR and push the arp button.

 

To make more triggered RPPR, simply go back to step 5.  Choose another key such as D2, and follow steps 6 to 10.

 

Playing and changing multiple RPPR’s.

Note about endless:  When endless is selected, you C#2 key will function as a toggle switch.  Hit C#2 once and the RPPR will loop forever; hit C#2 again to stop the RPPR.  Therefore if you have a RPPR on C#2 and another on D2 and wish to change patterns in real-time, do the following.

Hit C#2 to begin the first RPPR.  When you want to change to the second RPPR, hit C#2 and D2 simultaneously, you will seamlessly switch patterns!!

 

Triton LE

1)       Push the sequencer button.

2)       Push the F8 button.

3)       Choose Copy from combi.  Now select your combination for this example please select A003 Bass&WhirlySplit.  Place a check mark with effects, to tracks 1-8.  Select OK.

 

Now you have a combi with a split at middle C.  Turn on the arp button.  You will notice there is a drum pattern arpeggio for this combi.  The drums for this copied combi are on tracks 4, 6 and 7.  They are all on midi channel 2.

 

IMPORTANT:  Make sure that your RPPR pattern is accessing the correct track (timbre) and a different midi channel than your bass and keys split.  To check midi channel and verify that this copied combination’s drums are indeed on Midi channel 2, push menu and go to Prm1 page, you will see the track by track Midi channels now.  For future set-ups once you understand this tutorial, you may need to change a track’s midi channel.

We will first set up the dual arpeggiator for bass and piano comp.  Turn off arpeggiator by once again pushing the arp button.

4)       Push menu, then go the Arp page

5)       Setup tracks 1-8 as follows

Now we have arp A on the 2 keyboard sounds, and arp B on the 2 bass sounds.  Now to set up the split point.

6)       Push F5.

8)       Push F4.  Set  Arp B to whichever bass arp you wish, 1 octave, 1/16 note resolution, gate to 100%, Velocity to key or 127, no swing, check mark on latch for this example.

Turn on the arp button once again and see what you have, cool eh!

 

Now for the RPPR.

9)       Push menu, and go to RPPR

10)    If you want to make your own RPPR’s you may do so on the Pattern page.  For this tutorial we will use presets.  Push F2.

11)    Place a check mark in the Assign box.  Above this you will see C#2, this is the lowest black key on the 61 key Triton Le.

12)    Change the Pattern from user to Presets.  For this example choose P22 R&B 1/Std2.  To make the pattern continue when you release the key, Mode M:Endless.  Set the RPPR to track 7

 

Push the exit button to return to the main menu.  Place a check mark in the RPPR box.  See end of Triton step by step for more information on playing style, etc..

 

KARMA

1)       Push the sequencer button.

2)       Push the F8 button.

3)       Choose Copy from combi.  Now select your combination for this example please select E001 Bass&WhirlySplit.  Place a check mark with effects, to tracks 1-8.  Select OK.

 

Now you have a combi with a split at middle C.  Turn on Karma.  You will notice there is a drum GE for this combi.  The drum program for this copied combi is on track 4 and is on midi channel 2.

 

IMPORTANT:  Make sure that your RPPR pattern is accessing the correct track (timbre) and a different midi channel than your bass and keys split or any other Karma modules.  To check midi channel and verify that this copied combination’s drums are indeed on Midi channel 2, push menu and go to Prm1 page, you will see the track by track Midi channels now.

 

For this set-up please change track 3 (BASS) to a completely different Midi channel, such as Midi channel 3.  To do so push menu, Prm1, and highlight track 3’s midi channel (now on 1).  Change it to midi channel 3.  We will first set-up 2 Karma modules for bass and piano comp.  Turn off Karma by once again pushing the Karma’s on/off button.

4)       Push menu, then go the KARM page

5)       Place a check mark in both Module A and Module B’s “run” box.

6)       Push F2 to change which midi channel Module A and Module B will access.  For this example we will need Module A on Channel 1 (keyboard sounds) and Module B on Channel 3 (bass sound).  Make sure that no Module are using channel 2 (drums will use RPPR)

7)       Push the F1 button.  Move the cursor so you have highlighted Module A’s GE (to the right of A).  Push F8 and use the “Select by Category” option.  Use the wheel to select different categories, the cursor up and down buttons to move between the different GE’s within the category.  Find a keyboard comp you wish to use.  Push OK.

8)       Move the cursor so you have highlighted Module B’s GE (to the right of B).  Push F8 and use the “Select by Category” option.  Use the wheel to select different categories, the cursor up and down buttons to move between the different GE’s within the category.  Find a bass GE you wish to use.  Push OK.

Now we have 2 GE’s assigned.  Now to set up the split point for the Karma’s triggering and chord scanning

9)       Push F3.

Set Module A: C-4 Top G9 (Karma Module A key zone from middle C on)

Set Module B: C-1 Top B3 (Karma Module B key zone from B right below middle C down)

 

Turn on Karma and see what you have, cool eh!

 

Now for the RPPR.

10)    Push menu, and go to RPPR

Push the exit button to return to the main menu.  Place a check mark in the RPPR box.  See end of Triton step by step for more information on playing style, etc

 

NOTE:  Of course you can tweak the Karma modules to liking.  If you find the Karma is not synching, check the swing percentage, or the Quantize Trig box (should be checked).  Please refer to your manual for more information.

 

LAST BUT NOT LEAST!

Remember that any information store in the sequencer section is volatile memory and will be lost when one powers off any of these keyboards.  Therefore, once you have successfully set-up your mega-combi, save it to floppy disk or smart media.  Use the save Seq function in the disk (Triton Series and Karma) or Media (Triton LE) mode.  When you go to play your mega-combi again, simply reload the .sng (song) file on your media.
